Geraldine Catherine was born on January 14, 1923 in Boston, the third of seven children born to Irish immigrants Patrick and Elizabeth Fitzgerald Ryan. She was baptized with a form of her mother's maiden name two weeks later at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Mission Church and was educated in grammar and high school there by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Her childhood was marked by recurrences of St. Vitus' Dance but she recovered each time through the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
The year following her older sister Mary's profession as a School Sister of Notre Dame, Geraldine received the candidate's bonnet in the convent chapel on August 28, 1941 and arrived in Baltimore the next day. Sister Mary Alvina was received into the novitiate on July 8, 1943 and professed first vows on July 31, 1944. She began her teaching ministry at St. Philomena in Squirrel Hill, Pennsylvania.
Sister's thirty-two years of teaching continued at Holy Name of Jesus, Providence; Most Holy Redeemer, Manhattan; St. Anselm, Brooklyn; Immaculate Conception, Malden, Massachusetts; St. Mary, East Islip, Long Island; and Msgr. Clarke Regional School in Wakefield, Rhode Island.
In 1976 Sister Geraldine became a driver for the motherhouse community in Wilton and served for two years as director of transportation. Following a sabbatical at Our Lady of the Pines, Chatawa, Sister ministered as secretary at the Catholic Center for the Diocese of Bridgeport for seven years and for one year in Chatawa. From 1988 to 1991 Sister Geraldine ministered in the province development office.
Sister served as secretary at St. John the Evangelist, Leonia, New Jersey from 1991 to 1997, when she returned to Wilton to offer her skills as member of the Provincialate staff for two years. Sister Geraldine had been engaged in community service at Villa Notre Dame from 2001 until her recent illness.
May Sister Geraldine rest in God's peace.
