Mary was born in Krock, Germany.

Family rumor has it that Mary's oldest daughter, Minnie, was born out of wedlock in Germany. Mary and Minnie were sent to America because they shamed their family back home. Minnie was 9 when her mother married Fred Belling. Mary did not list herself as "widow" or "divorced" on the marriage record. Fred and Mary Louise were married November 2, 1886 in Appleton. Together they had four children: Louise Ella, William Charles, Eugenia Caroline and Emma.

Fred adopted Minnie and she was known as Minnie Belling for the rest of her life. Have not yet been able to confirm her birth record in Germany to see if the rumors are true.

Mary died of convulsions while giving birth to her 5th child, Emma. Emma died too. Both Mary and Emma were buried in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery in Appleton next to Fred's 1st wife, Minnie. At the time of Mary's death, Fred was left alone with 8 children. Minnie was the oldest at 17. The other children were 14, 12, 11, 10, 7, 4, and 2. Fred's mother was living with them at the time but committed suicide 3 months after Mary's death by over-dosing on an imported liqueur called Paris Green. Three months later and six months after Mary's death, Fred remarried for the 3rd time to Anna Blumenkranz, a divorcee with 2 daughters of her own.
