President of Mexico. Lopez Mateos served as President of Mexico from 1958 to 1964. He started his career as a librarian and teacher. Lopez Mateos got his start in public life with an assignment to the United Nations. He rose up in the main political party PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional) and became its secretary-general. In 1952 Lopez Mateos became Secretary of Labor. In this position he was skilled in mediating labor disputes and helped craft the U.S.-Mexico migrant labor treaty. In 1958 Lopez Mateos was elected president. His administration launched many programs in the domestic area including more industrialization, extended agrarian reform laws, stepped up government intervention in the economy, major public health programs, and a literacy campaign. Lopez Mateos suffered a stroke just shortly after his term ended and was in a coma until he passed away. (bio by: Mr. Badger Hawkeye)
