John was born in Scotland in 1808 and moved to the colonies with his parents sometime before 1830 when he married Frances M Shaw in SC. There they resided until 1840 when they emigrated to Alabama, settled in Pike County where they lived until his death. He was active in his support of schools and churches and was a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church at the time of his death. Their family consisted of the following children: Rebecca McBride, Roderick Alexander, Samuel, David Shaw, and one who died in infancy.
