James Robert "Jim" Eversole was born on June 20, 1891 near Goose Rock, a small rural community about seven miles from Manchester in Clay Co., Kentucky. Also known as "J.R.", Jim was the son of Lucy Eversole (1870-1954). His biological father is currently uncertain. Some believe it to have been John Emory Hill, who a few years later (1898), married James' mother. Unproven.

Jim's mother, Lucy, was born in the little community of Big Creek located in Clay Co., KY, near the town of Manchester. She is buried in the Eli Cemetery in Cumberland Gap, Claiborne Co., Tennessee. Lucy was the daughter of Jesse Eversole (1849-1911) and Mary Matilda Finley (1854-1990), both of whom were also natives of Clay Co., KY. and lived their entire lives there.

Jim's maternal great-grandparents were Woolery Eversole (1815-1862) and Justine Collins (1820-1862). Woolery, another Clay Co., KY native, died in 1862 during the Civil War while serving in the Union Army. His wife, Justine, was born in Tennessee. Her parents are thought to have been Amos Collins (1790-1864) and Mayvilla MNU (1796-bet 1860/70). Jim's paternal GG-grandparents were Abraham Eversole (1790-1864) and Sarah Williams (1794-1863).

Jim's maternal 3G-grandparents were Jacob Joseph (Ebersolh) Eversole (1760-1840) and Anna Marie "Mary" Kessler (1764-1860). The log house that his GGG-GF built (abt 1802) in Clay Co., KY is considered the oldest log structure still standing in Kentucky.

His 4G-grandfather was Abraham (Eversolh) Eversole, a German speaking immigrant preacher/farmer from Bern, Switzerland. He is thought to have arrived in America (Philadelphia, PA) with his parents about 1728.

On Mar. 6, 1910 Jim married Sarah Belle Bryant (1892-1985) in Cumberland Gap, Claiborne Co., TN. Both were 18 years of age. After marrying, Jim and Sarah lived in Cumberland Gap for about seven years, where their first three children (Evelyn, Bob & Frank) were born.

Sarah, my paternal grandmother, wrote in her Bible that she was born in "Wheeler, West Virginia". Wheeler is located in Lee Co., WV, less that 10 miles from the town of Cumberland Gap, TN. Apparently, Sarah's mother was staying with someone (midwife?) when Sarah was born. Sarah was the daughter of David C. "Dave" Bryant (1869-1926) and Martha Ann "Marthy" Freeman (1870-1955). Both were born in Claiborne Co., TN, lived and died there. they married in Claiborne (1887) & are buried there in the Scott Cemetery.

On Apr. 27, 1898, Jim's mother, Lucy, married widower, John Emory Hill (1852-1930), in Claiborne Co., TN. Lucy was 27, John 45. John's first wife, Synthia A. Robinson (1859-1892), suffered from TB for several years. She died at the age of 31 and is buried in the Alexander Cemetery in Speedwell, Claiborne co., TN.

Lucy and John would be married for 32 years and have three known children. John raised James, his step-son (?). He was a good father and raised James as if he was his own son. Some believe he was. In either case, John was the only father that Jim ever knew. Jim's parents, Lucy & John, are buried in Ely Cemetery in Cumberland Gap, Claiborne Co., TN.

During his younger years James supported his wife and family by working in coal and iron ore mines in eastern Kentucky and Tennessee. About 1943 (?) he moved his family to the Portland area of Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY where he worked as a watchman and elevator operator. In his latter years he worked part time as a ticket taker in the Ohio Movie Theater then located on Louisville's famous Fourth Street.

James and Sarah were married for nearly 50 years and had seven known children. In order of their birth their were Evelyn Rae Eversole (1911-2006), Robert James "Bob" Eversole (1913-1993), Frank Andis "Ted" Eversole (1917-2002), Derbert Weir "Dub" Eversole (1920-1969), Loraine Hattie Eversole (1923-2003), Jack Virgil Eversole (1926-1955) and Bonnie Belle Eversole (1928-2016).

About 1959, Jim (68) and Sarah (67), while still living in the Portland community (1829 Baird St.) of Louisville, surprised their family and friends by divorcing. Divorce is rather unusual for couples of that age.

Jim's second marriage (abt 1960) was to divorcee , Mary Elizabeth "Cecilia" McIntyre (1909-1998). Her memorial incorrectly shows their marriage as being in 1953. At the time of their marriage Jim was about 69, Cecilia about 51. They were married in Louisville, KY. Born in Springfield, Washington Co., KY, Cecelia was the daughter of Thomas Kent McIntyre (1876-1940) and Elizabeth Claudia "Claud" Blandford (1881-1956). It was also her second marriage. Her first marriage (1927) having been to Andrew George "Andy" Bohn (1905-1967).

Jim died on May 13, 1965 in Louisville at the age of 72 as the result of prostate cancer. He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery located on Bardstown Road in Louisville. The short inscription on his headstone reads "Beloved Husband".

Sarah, Jim's first wife, eventually moved to Harrogate, Claiborne Co., TN. She died there on Jan. 3, 1985 at the age of 92. At the time of her death, her divorced son, Bob, had been living with her for several years and had been taking good care of his elderly mother. Sarah is buried in the Scott Cemetery located in Harrogate, Claiborne Co., TN. After his mother's death, her son, Bob, continued to live in their mobile home until his death in 1993. A US Army veteran (1935-38), Bob is buried in the Scott Cemetery and has a military marker.

Jim's second wife, Cecelia, died on July 15, 1998 in Louisville, KY at the age of 88. She is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery in that city, where her parents are buried.
