George B. Craven, 58 year old editor of the Thomasville Tribune and well-known citizen of this section, died this morning at the Guilford County Sanitorium.
Mr. Craven who made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Bruce Coltrane on Hill Street, was the grandson of Braxton Craven, D.D., first president of Trinity College, now Duke University.
Surviving are Mrs. Coltrane, and three brothers, Dr. J.B. Craven of Greensboro, H.B. Craven of Lakeland, Florida and E.B. Craven of Lexington. Born at Trinity, August 16, 1884, a son of Dr. James L. and Nannie Bulla Craven, he was educated at the Trinity public schools. He was married to Carrie Edwards in 1904, who passed away in 1911. Mrs. Coltrane wa the only child of that union. He was married again in 1913 to Hester Wills, who died October 4, 1939.
Funeral services will be held at the chapel of the Sechrest Funeral Home Friday afternoon at 4:00 by Rev. Harold Robertson of Winston-Salem, former pastor of the Trinity Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Trinity cemetery.
Twelve years of Mr. Craven's early life was spent in newspaper work. Starting in 1908 and in successive years he was editor of the Selma (N.C.) News, managing editor of the Crescent Press in Spencer, managing editor of the Lexington Leaders, news and telegraph editor of the Greensboro Daily News, editor of the Danville (VA) Register and editor of the Halifax (VA) Gazette. In 1914 he went to Chase City, VA, as editor of the Progress and remained there until 1918, when he left to take the editorship of the Lancaster, SC News.
He came to High Point two years later and enter the bond business, which later became the George B. Craven Investment Securities Company. He maintained this firm until 1939, when he retired from that field.
In May, 1941, he assumed the editorship of the Thomasville Tribune, where he was connected when he died.
