OBITUARY: Presque Isle County Advance, Vol 127, # 37, Thursday, 09/15/2005: SISTER MARY ADRIAN

Sister Mary Adrian, a Sister of Mercy for 73 years, died September 12, 2005, at McAuley Retirement Center in Farmington Hills. She was 91.

She was born December 13, 1913, in Rogers City to August and Louise (Dullack) Adrian, and christened Genevieve at her baptism. She graduated from Mount Mercy Academy in Grand Rapids in 1931 and entered the Sisters of Mercy the following year. She professed final vows on August 16, 1938.

Sister Mary Adrian earned a bachelor's degree from Mercy College of Detroit and a master's degree in education from the University of Notre Dame. She served as a teacher and principal for 42 years in parochial schools in Michigan and Iowa.

Starting in 1935, she taught primary through junior high students in Ada, Grand Rapids, Holland, Midland, Cheboygan, Saginaw, Posen, Hazel Park, Reese, Muskegon, Ludington, Hemlock, Lansing, Pinconning and Port Austin. She also served as a principal for 16 years at Holy Cross School in Lansing, St Jean's and St Michael's Schools in Muskegon, and St John's School in Independence, Iowa.

In 1977, Sister Mary moved to the less formal setting of a religious education center and became resident manager of Mercy Center, Farmington Hills. She later served as coordinator at the Convent of Mercy in Grand Rapids. Sister Mary Adrian moved to McAuley Center in 1985 and served as receptionist there until 1994 when she retired to a life of prayer.

Sister Mary Adrian was dearly loved by her students and coworkers. It was said that children couldn't wait to set foot in her classroom. She knew how to get a child's attention and convey solid information and teach skills they would use for a life-time.

Sister Mary Adrian's quiet, unassuming manner was treasured by those who knew her. One of the Sisters of Mercy commented: "She was always available to help others and she did it with a smile." She is survived by several nieces and nephews and by the members of her Mercy community.

Visitation was Wednesday (September 14) at McAuley Center, Farmington Hills, where a prayer service was conducted that evening at 7 o'clock.

The funeral mass will be celebrated in the McAuley Center chapel today (Thursday, September 15) at 9 o'clock this morning, followed by burial at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Southfield.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the McCabe Funeral Home, Farmington Hills. Memorials may be made to Mercy Ministry Fund. 29000 Eleven Mile Rd. Farmington Hills, MI 48336-1405.
