Garland Elston Nance, 82, of Thurman Beck Road, Lexington, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Lexington Health Care after an illness of five months. The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Friday at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church, where he was a member, by the Revs. Clarence Sifford and Eric Disher. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park with military graveside rites by an honor guard from Fort Bragg. Mr. Nance was born March 31, 1919, in Davidson County to Edward Elston Nance and Anna Mae Swing Nance. He was a retired supervisor from Dixie Furniture and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Nance; two brothers, Willie Nance and Francis Doc Nance; and a sister, Thelma Lee Nance. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Paige Beck Nance of the home; two sons, Ronnie Nance of Lexington and Gene Nance of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Forrest Nance of Lexington; and three sisters, Elizabeth Godfrey of Lexington, Jewel Embler of Thomasville and Irene Howard of Tucson, Ariz. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home of a son, Ronnie Nance, 5032 Old Highway 64 East. Memorials may be made to Davidson County Cancer Services, 503 W. Center St., Lexington, North Carolina 27292.
