Sophia Maria Muller was born in Welda, Westfalen, Prussia. Near Warburg. Her parents were Joseph Muller and Helen Glade. She had three brothers and three sisters. She landed at New Orleans, Louisiana, on 15 December 1858, aboard the ship "Globus."

She married Hermann Preut in 1863 at St. Mary of Victories church in St. Louis, Mo. They had a daughter in 1864. He enlisted in the 84th regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia in April 1864 and died in the Civil War.

She married Hermann's brother, John George Preut, on 14 January 1866 in St. Louis, Mo., and had at least four children by him. Thus, her first child was half-sister to her other children.

Son Joseph Henry Preut was born on 9 October 1866 and died on 18 August 1873. He was christened at St. Mary of Victories church, where his parents were married. Census records indicate that Sophia Muller had ten children, but only two survived until 1910.
