Myrtle Vierretta Burgess, 93, of Kirksville, formerly of Wyaconda and Memphis, died Wednesday morning, October 31, 2001 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville.
She was born the daughter of Alonzo and Florence Elizabeth (Bales) Mitchum on September 5, 1908, in McCook, NE. She married Billie Burgess on December 10, 1923 in Overland, KS. He preceded her in death.
Myrtle had resided in the Kirksville Manor Care for the last three years. Prior to that time she had been a resident of this area for most of her adult life, living in Memphis, Wyaconda, and Granger, MO. She also lived in Keokuk, IA, for several years. She was a homemaker and farm wife all her life.
Myrtle was a loving and giving person. She cherished her family most of all, especially her grandchildren. Myrtle always took the opportunity to spend time visiting friends and considered it a privilege to help a friend in need.
In her spare time, she enjoyed working in her garden. In addition to a good crop of flowers, she intended to have an abundance of vegetables to give to her family and friends. Myrtle also enjoyed piecing quilts and comforters.
She is survived by her sister, Elsie Bishop; five grandchildren, Tony Whiteside (who grew up in her home), Echo Pelster, Melody Peterson, Crystal Byrns, and Ivy Ebeling; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Kussman and husband William Colbert; 14 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents, a daughter, Carol Burgess Whiteside; a son, Billy Joe Burgess; son-in-law, Harry Whiteside; four grandchildren, Billy Joe Burgess, Jr., Jewel Dean Burgess, Tanya Kussman, and Dell Hai; one great-granddaughter, Misty White; three sisters, Gertrude Mitchum, Emma Wishon, and Edith Wright; three brothers, Donel, Lester, and Leonard Mitchum.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 3, at the Gorin (MO) City Cemetery with the Rev. Ernest Deatrick officiating. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, November 2, at the Gerth Funeral Home in Memphis, Memorials are suggested to the O.A.T.S.
