Joseph Kehler was born on 26 Apr 1818 in Wolfe Township, Lycoming, Pennsylvania, to Abraham Kehler and his wife Anne Elizabeth Shelley. He married Mary Ann Landon in 1840 in Liberty Township, Tioga, Pennsylvania, and had a number of children (at least 13) by her. In about 1855, the family moved to Nebraska Territory, initially to Plattsmouth, and thence to the Salt Creek Precinct, Cass County, Nebraska, where he lived until shortly before he died on 12 Jul 1893, in Davy, Lancaster, Nebraska, at the home of his son, John Ellis Kehler. He was a blacksmith and one of the first farmers to settle in the Cass and Lancaster counties border area.
