John Atkinson was born in England, as was his wife, Ann Grunshaw. They were married in New York state. They lived there for several years before moving to Wisconsin. They moved to Lancaster county, Nebraska about 1864 and purchased land on the old Indian trail.

When the Union Pacific railroad was built they moved to a farm on Rock creek and Atkinson built the Rock Creek mill which he operated for several years. His son, Nelson Atkinson, drowned when trying to free a log jam on the river.

He and his wife were the parents of ten children.
