After being a widow for almost 15 years, the marauding soldiers on both sides of the Civil War encamped on her farm and seized her crops, livestock and rails (for firewood). She had the courage to go on after watching her 16 yr. old, William, beaten unmercifully by the Rebs. Two other sons were off fighting for the Union, but one never came home. She later received compensation from the Southern Claims Commission for her losses, since she was a "good Union woman."
