Son of John Martin Doty (1815-1894, Chillicothe resident) and Sarah H. (Jones) Doty. Evidence shows Theodore may have fought in the Civil War (1864) with the 149th Ohio Infantry in skirmishes in Maryland and Virginia. He began his employment at age 15 with the B & O Railroad. The 1870 Census shows he was a "boss in a coal mine." In 1888 he relocated to Portsmouth, Ohio, first with the Scioto Valley Railway as a freight agent and remained there when that company merged with the Norfolk & Western Railway. Married to Martha E.Weaver (9th July 1868). Father to Frank H. Doty (28 July 1869 - 28 Oct. 1940), Harry J. Doty (19 July 1871, 11 Apr. s1955), Lizzie H. Doty Hudson (21 Sept. 1873, 14 Feb. 1956), Lucien McG. Doty (14 Oct. 1876 - 9 March 1953), Edith B. Doty Minshall (b. 27 June 1879 - d. 7 April 1926), and Charles Rowe Doty (27 Sept. 1881, d. 21 May 1950). Theodore was very active in Republican Party politics as well as in Portsmouth affairs, serving on the city council 1896-97, the school board 1898-99, and was president of the Portsmouth Board of Trade 1896-1901. He was a member of various ranks for the Masons and the Elks Lodge. His home at 1407 Offnere Street was even featured on an early postcard of Portsmouth sites.
