George Bernard Wessel, 84, of Kelly, KS, died Thursday, February 4, 2010, at the Life Care Center in Seneca.
He was born October 14, 1925, on the Wessel family homestead, a farm southwest of Kelly, KS, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Macke Wessel. He attended St. Bede's School at Kelly. He helped on the family farm and continued to farm there after his father retired; he remained an active farmer and stockman until he entered the nursing home in 2008.
George was a member of St. Bede's Church, the St. Joseph Society at Kelly, and the Knights of Columbus #1769. He enjoyed bowling and playing cards; he loved raising cattle and was of proud that he played baseball for the town of Kelly well into his 30s.
He is survived by his brother, Andrew Wessel of Seneca and his sister, Rita Stuke of Seneca.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Francis on March 28, 2000, Henry on December 18, 1995 and Albert H. on April 15, 2001; and a sister, Mary Korte on June 9, 2000.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 AM Monday, February 8, St. Bede's Church in Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
