Services for J. Hoyt Brown, Sr, 87, pioneer businessman and early day postmaster were officiated by Rev. Anthony Thibodeaux, former pastor of Olney First Christian Church.

Brown died at his home on South Avenue M. He had been in ill health since suffering injuries from an accidental fall on 20 June.

His parents came to Texas in a covered wagon in 1872, locating first in Dallas County and then moving to Bunger, Young County, Texas in 1872.

In 1897, Brown came to the Olney area to open a business store, Olney's second business firm. In 1897, Olney had a church building, a school building and a blacksmith shop.

Later, while still a merchant, Brown was Olney's third postmaster. Brown issued the first postal money order in Olney. He had the first local telephone installed in his store. The phone line to Graham was strung along barbed wire fences.

Brown was a barber for a time, in 1907, he turned to painting and construction. He was a building contractor from 1908, a knowledge that came in handy in 1918 when the Brown residence was smashed by Olney's first tornado.

Brown was a member of the Olney's first town band. He helped organize the first Woodmen of the World chapter.

In 1900, he married Miss Carrie Gibbs.

In 1922, Hoyt Brown and son, J.H. Brown were building a house near Megargel for Jess Rodgers.
