Early censuses stated James Marion's birthplace as both Louisiana and Arkansas. On the back of his picture, in possession of Sue Rodgers, James' granddaughter wrote that he was born in Polk County, Louisiana. There is none such in Louisiana, but there is in Arkansas, which became a state after James was born. The Louisiana Territory was created in 1805 and became Missouri Territory in 1812. In 1810, what is now Polk County was still Indian Land.
