James Abraham Hankins, born January 19, 1909, died at 1:20pm on August 3, 2000 in Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Gaithersburg, Maryland following a stroke and heart attack on July 28th. He had been living in Asbury Methodist Village Assisted Living, Gaithersburg, since moving from Lafayette, Indiana in 1998 to be near his children. His wife of over 70 years, Alice Blue Hankins, preceded him on February 6, 1999. He leaves two sons, two daughters, 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Mr. Hankins, a native of Jasper County and Barkley Township was born in the B. J. Gifford Hotel in Gifford, IN and belonged to the Disciples of Christ Church in Gifford. His early life was spent in Gifford where he taught in a "one room" school. He was a popular teacher with his students and a hard worker for his church. He was active in his teaching profession until the Depresssion when he entered the sales field. He came to Lafayette, Indiana in 1938 as an agency manager with the Lincoln National Life Insurance Company also with responsibility for agent training in the northwest quarter of Indiana. In 1953 he joined the Columbus Mutual Life Insurance Company. He belonged to the National Underwriters Association, was President of the Life Underwriters Association in 1942 and was an Honarary Life Member of the local Underwirters Association.
Mr. Hankins was a 33rd degree Mason active in Masonic Lodge #492 of Lafayette and the Scottish Rite of Indianapolis for some 52 years. He was an active member for many years of the First Christian Church in Lafayette. Mr. Hankins retired at the age of 62 after 35 years in the insurance business.
After retirement he continued to be active as a motivational speaker for church and family groups and the Masonic Temple, emphasizing, "Sign Boards of Life to Travel by." This volumteer work provided funds for hospitals, schools and the needy and his successful efforts were recognized in 1998 with an award from the Scottish Rite Masons.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters:

Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 pm Friday August 11th at the Hippensteel Funeral Home in Lafayette. The funeral is Saturday, Aug. 12 at 1:00 pm at the First Christian Church, Lafayette, in. Interment will be at the Weston Cemetery in Rensselaer, IN.
