American historian and expert on the Soviet Union
Son of Harlow Clarke Curtiss and his wife, Ethel (Mann) Curtiss. His mother was born in Vienna, Austria, of American parents.

During the 1930s he worked in the Soviet Union for one of the few U.S. companies allowed to operate there.
He was a longtime James B. Duke Professor of History at Duke University.

In 1981, he went to Honolulu to live with his daughter. He died died there Dec. 27, 1983
He was survived by: his daughter, Anne Fong, Ph.D,; his son, John Sutter Curtiss, Ph.D., professor of economics at the University of Cincinnati; 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
