Son of John Meckes and Elizabeth Greenzweig. Samuel was baptized at Salem Union Church in Gilbert, Northampton (now Monroe) Co., Pennsylvania; sponsors were Samuel Greenzweig and his wife, Sarah (Greenszweig).

Samuel L Meckes married Anna Fayette Kleintop (daughter of John F Kleintop and Mary Ann Altemus) 1 Nov 1872, the Rev. Abraham Bartholomew presiding.

Samuel was a veteran of Company D, 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry in the Civil War. He enlisted on 14 March 1864 at Easton, PA for 3 years. It was recorded that his eyes were gray, hair - sandy, complexion - ruddy, height - 6 feet 1 inch, occupation - teamster, and distinguishing characteristics - a mole on his left leg and a scar on the back of his neck. He was mustered out on 13 August 1865 after receiving $180 of a promised $300. (Compiled service record at National Archives).

In 1870 Samuel Meckes, age 33 a lumberman, was living in Penn Forest Twp. in Carbon Co., PA. Living in his household were Anna Kleintop, age 26, with two Kleintop children; Elamanda age 3 and an infant age one month; Daniel Meckes
(Samuel's brother) age 19; Isaac B. Lutz age 23 a laborer; and Annetta Lutz age 18 a domestic servant. Samuel was living next door to his brother, Joseph Meckes, and his family. Samuel owned real estate valued at $8,000 and had a personal estate of $450. (1870 census, Carbon Co., PA, Penn Forest Twp., pg. 351, house #76, family #69)

In 1880 Samuel L. Meckes, listed as age 35 but actually age 43, a laborer, was living in Penn Forest Twp., Carbon Co., PA, with his wife, Fayette Meckes age 35, and three of their daughters; Emma Meckes age 10, Elizabeth Meckes age 9, and Tillia Meckes age 5. Also listed in their household were a step-daughter, Ellen Serfoss age 13, and Joseph Meckes age 22 a laborer (Samuel's nephew). All were born in PA.
