Bozeman Daily Chronicle (MT) - April 30, 2005
Deceased Name: JOHN H. BOS
John H. Bos went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 18, 2005, at the age of 93. The third child of Clausen and Carolina Bos, John was born May 26, 1911, in the community of Churchill, Mont., where he lived until age six. His family then moved to Washington where he spent his childhood working in the vineyards and apple orchards.

He spent one winter in British Columbia before moving back to Montana in 1927 and there began working in agriculture and helped build county roads, both with horses.

He married Martha Veltkamp on Feb. 28, 1934. Blessed with nine children, John and Martha raised their family for some 20 years on their farm south of Churchill.

John was a dedicated worker in many endeavors including logging, dairy farming and running a farm implement dealership in Bozeman in 1956 with his brother Henry. John devoted his life to serving Jesus Christ. He spoke of Him until his last days with us and could be heard singing "Jesus Loves Me" in the halls of the hospital.

His honesty and integrity were known by all those who knew him. He loved visiting his elderly neighbors and would often read the Bible and pray with them. In the evenings he could be heard reading the Bible out loud. He laughed heartily and smiled often.

John and Martha moved their family to southwest of Bozeman
in 1956.

In their home they raised their nine children to walk with God and then opened their home as a sanctuary for all their grandchildren...69 in all.

John loved agriculture and was never afraid of trying something new. He continued to help his own children in agriculture until he was 89 years old!

His grandson Craig recalls Grandpa John coming out to help with the haying at 3 a.m. one morning when he was 89. A philosophy of life was "I would rather wear out than rust out."

John loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. During his final days one more great-great-grandchild was born.

In their last years together he took care of his wife Martha, whom he affectionately called "Kiddo," helping her with gardening, physical needs, cooking and laundry.

John's best advice was to "know God and enjoy Him forever."

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Gordon and Clarence (Buck); son-in-law, Don VanDyken; two grandsons; one great-grandson; brothers, Joe and Henry and sister, Grace Veltkamp; sister-in-law, Christine DeBoer; brothers-in-law, Jacob and Jack Veltkamp.

He is survived by his children: Jean Van Dyken, Riverside, Calif.; Eldon Bos, Mira Loma, Calif.; James (Lois) Bos, Billings; Ronald (Janice) Bos, Bozeman; Helen (Duane) Kamps, Freeland, Wash.; David (Marilyn) Bos, Bozeman; Kathy (Carl) Wierda, Bozeman; and daughters-in-law: Betty (Dorick) Savejo and Kathy Bos, Alta Loma, Calif.

Also surviving are his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Nellie Bos, Bozeman; Gertrude (Simon) Kingma, Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; Albert (Win) Veltkamp, Albuquerque, N.M.; Kay (Gerb) Duthler, Zeeland, Mich.; sister-in-law Florence (Emmelkamp) Veltkamp, Lyndron, Wash.; and brother Dick Bos, San Diego, Calif.

Also surviving are 27 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation at Manhattan Christian Reformed Church will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Graveside service will follow in Churchill Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. at Bozeman Christian Reformed Church.
