The Reverend Samuel Tyndale Wilson (1858-1944), 5th President of Maryville College, reportedly spoke at John McCampbell's funeral. Some of Rev. Wilson's words offer insight into John's life:
"John McCampbell was one of eight children of James McCampbell and Betsey Ingram. He was born in Knox County near the Old Washington Presbyterian Church on January 9, 1830. … In 1849 the entire family moved to Tuckaleechee Cove, Blount County. There, in 1860, John purchased a farm from his kinsman, John Caldwell, who was greatly interested in the search for minerals."
