Samuel Hollinger Burgard was born Aug 26, 1852 in York Co, Pa. His parents were Samuel Burgard (1819-1867) & Lucy Hollinger Burgard (1821-1907). The Burgard family was of German descent and the Hollinger family immigrated to the U.S. from Switzerland in 1731.

Samuel Hollinger Burgard married Charity Ellen Clevenger on February 2, 1873. Her parents were George J. Clevenger (1815-1900) and Charity Logsdon Clevenger (1816- 1887).

Samuel was a blacksmith in Avalon, Mo. He also farmed. Later he and a son-in-law, Charley Wilson had a mail service between Avalon & Chillicothe. They began using a wagon and horses and later acquired a Ford Car.
