The Rev. Horace Reed, patriarch of the Illinois Methodist conference, died at 12:55 o'clock Sunday afternoon at his home in Decatur at the age of 73 years. His death came as the result of a stroke of apoplexy last spring from which he never recovered.

Dr. Reed was well known throughout Illinois, having been in the ministry for years. Dr. Reed also served in the civil war in the union army as a member of Company A, Eighty-ninth regiment, Ohio infantry.

Dr. Reed during his years as a pastor held a score or more of pastorates in the state. In 1873 he was pastor of what was then called the Second M. E. church. For many years Dr. Reed was a member of the book committee of the Methodist church. He effected many changes in Methodist publications.

He was leader in the Illinois conference and was always held in high esteem by the bishops and pastors. He was also well known as a lecturer. The Rev. Dr. Reed came to Decatur in September 1875.

He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Miss Mary Luella Reed of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Roy W. Saner of Decatur, and Mrs. George R. Coffman of Missoula, Mont., and one son, the Rev. Clarence Reed of Palo Alto, Cal.

The funeral of the Rev. Horace Reed, who died Sunday afternoon at his residence in Decatur, was held yesterday afternoon at the First Methodist chuch in Decatur. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery. There were sixty members of the Illinois conference in attendance at the funeral and a great number of the lay body attended.
