The only son of Faisal I, he was cared for by his grandfather Hussein bin Ali, the Grand Sharif of Mecca, while his father was busy in his campaigns and travels. In 1924 Ghazi was appointed crown prince. He assumed the crown as King Ghazi I on September 8, 1933, upon the death of his father. Ghazi was a staunch pan-Arab nationalist and was opposed to British interests in his country. He supported the military when it ousted the civilian government. Ghazi was rumored to have sympathies for Nazi Germany and wanted to annex Kuwait to Iraq. He passed away on April 4, 1939 in a mysterious accident involving a sports car he was driving.
