PEKIN - Michael Van Cochran, 87, of Pekin died Saturday (Jan. 23, 2010) at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born June 15, 1922, in Portland, Maine, a son of Jim and Julia Allen Cochran. He married the mother of his children, Lula Mae Clark on Jan. 25, 1942. She preceded him in death in 1993.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son and one grandson.
Surviving are his wife, Marian D. Cochran of Peoria, Ariz.; daughter, Phyllis (Roger) Harlan of Pekin; sons, James J. (Pamela) Cochran of Peoria and Michael A. Cochran of Edmond, Okla.; daughters, Jacqueline B. Schaefer of Bartlesville, Okla., and Sherrie L. (Charles) Wilcox of Wichita, Kan.; sons, Mark A. Cochran of Edmond, Okla., and Dawes D. Cochran of Cushing, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two ex-wives, Virginia Stout and Loraine Sheley.
Michael retired from John Deere of East Moline. He became an owner and operator freight hauler, traveling the continental U.S. lastly employed by Manufacturing Maintenance Solutions in Pekin, retiring in 2007.
He was a WWII Army veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater where he received the Purple Heart. During his tenure with John Deere he was a proud member of the UAW, and served as a regional committeeman.
Michael was a mason, a student of history and current events, and writer of poetry. He enjoyed almost all sports, and played baseball, golf, pool and ping pong.
Cremation will be accorded with a private family service in Oklahoma. The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
