Assistant Chief of Police, Lt. Colonel Edward A. Sanders, DSN 1988, was commissioned as a Police Officer on 05/03/1948. His first assignment after graduating from the academy was the 4Th District on 06/28/1948. On 02/01/1963 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and remained in the 4Th District as a "Line Platoon Supervisor." On 04/06/1969 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant which is a "Watch Commander" and remained in the 4Th District. On 08/24/1969 he was transferred to the Bureau of Investigation. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 12/13/1970 and became the Commander of the Bureau of Investigation. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Major and was transferred to the Bureau of Field Operations. On 11/19/1978 he was promoted the the rank of Lt. Colonel and became the Assistant Chief of Police. He remained in this position until state law mandated that he retired at the age of 65. So on 03/24/1980, the day before his 65 birthday Lt. Colonel Sanders retired from the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department with 31.89 years of faithful and dedicated service to the department. During his career he was awarded 2 Chiefs Letters of Commendation for police work above the call of duty on 03/01/1969 and 01/01/1970. Lt. Colonel Sanders was also a veteran of the United States Army and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
