He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He died from his wounds after an improvised explosive device detonated while he was leading a foot patrol south of Sangin district centre, in Helmand province.

Aged 21, from Hereford. LCpl Cooper enlisted in 2005, completed training and deployed to Afghanistan in October 2009. He was described as a consummate soldier and was promoted in December to section Second in Command. "Coops" was fondly remembered by his comrades as hardworking and enthusiastic with a great sense of humour. He was a fitness fanatic and wanted to become an army physical training instructor. A fan of Hereford United FC, he also enjoyed playing football.

LCpl Cooper is survived by his parents Karl and Caroline, sister Kirsty, other relatives and friends.

Funeral with full military honours was held February 19, 2010 at Hereford Cathedral.
