Philadelphia, August 23.—James W. Paul, the oldest member of the Philadelphia bar, died this morning at his home at Villa Nova, a suburb. Mr. Paul was admitted to the bar in 1837, when but twenty-one years of age. He attained a high reputation as a lawyer, and up to a dozen years ago was active at the bar of the Philadelphia courts. For the last decade, notwithstanding his age, Mr. Paul had been active in office law business in an advisory capacity as counsel for financial institutions and other corporations.
Mr. Paul was the father of the late Mrs. Waldorf Astor of New York, and leaves four living children—Mr. James W. Paul, jr., a member of the firm of Drexel & Co., bankers; Frank W. Paul, a prominent lawyer of Philadelphia; Allen G. Paul, an officer in the United States navy, and Lawrence T. Paul, a civil engineer.
