Birth: Aug. 18, 1786
Death: Jan. 15, 1821

A well made gravestone contains an inscription that is crudely carved by hand. The inscriptions looks something like the following:

"DID E" was meant to be "DIED." The year of death can be read only as 1821.

Who was John Morton buried in this cemetery?

Also buried in the cemetery are:
Lucy Jane (Morton) Tudor 1820-1841
Nancy B. (Morton) Kindred 1821-1898
Thomas Garland "Garland" Kindred 1819-1901
Other graves are marked by fieldstones.

Lucy Jane and Nancy B. were daughters of John Morton b ca 1784 d Jan. 1830 and Nancy Quinn. Garland Kindred was Nancy B. Morton's husband

Who was John Morton buried in this cemetery?

Other than John Morton b ca 1784 d Jan. 1830 (see separate memorial), no other John Morton is found in Madison Co., KY records. Was another John Morton visiting when he died? Or was this actually the stone for John Morton died in Jan. 1830?

The approximate birth of John Morton (husband of Nancy Quinn) is 1784, but the actual birth year may vary a few years more or less. So the birth date of 18 Aug. 1786 (per inscription on the gravestone) would be reasonable. Both the death dates of 15 Jan. 1821 (inscription) and Jan. 1830 (Nancy Quinn's husband) include the month of January. Was the inscription in error concerning the year of death and does this stone mark the grave of John Morton who died in Jan. 1830, and was husband of Nancy Quinn; father of, among others, Lucy Jane (Morton) Tudor and Nancy B. (Morton) Kindred? Was the gravestone possibly placed in the cemetery years after the death or at least was the carving of the inscription years after the death? In either case, the possiblity of an error would have been increased.

Whether you conclude that this gravestone does or does not mark the grave of John Morton who married Nancy Quinn, his death should be listed as Jan. 1830 (not Jan. 1821). For further information, see memorial of John Morton ca 1784-Jan.1830.
