Egyptian President, Military Leader. He was educated at the Cairo Military Academy and rapidly rose through the ranks of the army. Naguib served during the Palestine War of 1948 and it was this failed campaign that reinforced his view that the government of King Farouk was inefficient and corrupt. In 1949, he joined the Free Officers Movement, a group of military officers who were secretly plotting to overthrow Farouk. By early 1952 Naguib was the leader of this group and after King Farouk was overthrown on July 26, 1952, he became the leader of Egypt. Naguib first served as prime minister, but when a Republic of Egypt was established on June 18, 1953, he became the first president. After he became president, there was constant squabbles between Colonel Gamal Abdel-Nasser, who many felt was the power behind Naguib, and him. On November 14, 1954, Naguib resigned and Nasser became president. After his resignation, he lived in isolation until 1972 when he was released by President Anwar Sadat. Upon his passing in 1984, Naguib was given a military funeral.
