HEAT IS CAUSE OF ST. HELENA DEATH
JOHN BETZ, PIONEER RESIDENT, DIES AT HOME LAST THURSDAY

Unable to withstand the intense heat of the past two weeks which augmented a condition of poor health due to injuries received in an accident four years ago, John Betz, pioneer resident of Cedar county, died at his home in St. Helena late Thursday night.

Mr. Betz was born on his parent's homestead near St. Helena, where they were settled when they came over from Germany on May 15, 1861. Son of one of the first pioneer families in the county and resident of the St. Helena community since his birth, Mr. Betz had witnessed Cedar county grow from a handful of struggling pioneers to a prosperous agricultural community.

He is survived by his widow and nine (sic/ten) children. The sons and daughters are Mrs. Walter Chaney of Watertown, S. D., Mrs. Henry Smith of St. Helena, Mrs. L. Hikes, Misses Anna, Emma, Frieda, Frances, Louis and Freddie, all at home. Two sons, William and Tony, preceded their father in death. Mr. Betz is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. George Housman, Sr., of St. Helena, Mrs. William Hirsch of Norfolk and Mrs. August Fuersten of Le Mars, Iowa.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fr. Stratman at Immaculate Conception Church of St. Helena Monday and interment was made in the St. Helena cemetery. Pall bearers six old school mates of Mr. Betz, Barney King, Harvey Jensen, Barney Becker, Louis Roling, Joe Suing and Will Feiner.
