VELMA LEOLA WILKINSON WAS BORN IN TEXAS. SHE GREW UP IN THE GRAPEVINE AREA BEFORE MOVING TO GAINESVILLLE AND THEN ACROSS THE RED RIVER TO THACKERVILLE, LOVE COUNTY, OKLAHOMA.
VELMA WAS FROM A LARGE FAMILY WITH MANY BROTHERS AND SISTERS
ROBERT, CHARLIE, BENJAMIN. ROBERT, JOSEPHINE, ALMA,FRANK,AND JIMMY(WHO DIED YOUNG). SHE GREW UP ON A FARM IN THE DAYS WHERE A LITTLE GIRL LIVED IN HER FATHER'S HOUSE AND LIVED BY HER FATHER'S RULES, BEFORE GOING TO HER HUSBANDS HOUSE AND LIVING BY HER HUSBANDS RULES.THAT ,OF COURSE, DID NOT LAST. DON'T MISUNDERSTAND ME. MY GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS A WONDERUL MAN WHO LOVED ONE WOMAN WITH ALL HIS HEART HIS WHOLE LIFE, LOVED HIS FAMILY AND DEVOTED HIS LIFE TO SETTING EXAMPLES FOR HIS CHILDREN.HE WAS A FARMER, A STOCKMAN AND A MULE SKINER, THAT IS WHEN HE WASN'T BUSY WORKING FOR THE LOCAL CHURCH OF CHRIST AND PLAYING HIS FIDDLE FOR THE MOST ENTHUSIASTIC OF CROWDS AND EVEN IN THE HARDEST OF TIMES DURING THE DEPRESSION, RASING MONEY FOR THE LOCAL ORPHANAGE. IT IS FORTUNATE, ESPECIALLY FOR VELMA, THAT HER FATHER WAS A VERY KIND AND PATIENT MAN.WHILE SHE WORKED HARD IN HOUSE AND FIELD, LEARNING HER RELIGION, PERFECTING HER COOKING AND SEWING, TENDING THE GARDENS AND CARING FOR HER SIBLINGS, IT DIDN'T TAKE LONG FOR FOR HER BLINDLINGLY EBELLIOUS STREAK TO SHOW. SHE SET THE WHOLE FAMILY ON IT'S EAR WHEN SHE HAD HER EARS PIERCED WITHOUT HER DADDY'S PERMISSION, BOBBED HER HAIR BEFORE IT WAS FASHIONABLE, WORE MAKEUP AND NAIL POLISH, AND ALWAYS OUT PERFORMED THE BOYS AT SCHOOL IN BASKETBALL.
VELMA MARRIED NIG MORGAN EARLY ON WHICH ENDED IN DIVORCE.THEN WWII BROKE OUT AND VELMA VOLUNTEERED AS A NURSE/AID AT THE GAINESVILLE, TEXAS CAMP HOUSE.AND FATE, AS IT OFTEN DOES, STEPPED IN.DUE TO THE ACTUAL SHIFT ROTATION THE NURSES SIMPLY DIVIDED BEDS AND OFTEN WORKED OVER INTO DOUBLE SHIFTS. SO HERE CAME THE "TWIST TO END ALL FATES" VELMA WAS WORKING OVER WHEN A YOUNG SOLDIER ,GEORGE MONROE LEE,WAS BROUGHT IN WITH EXTENSIVE SCHRAPNAL WOUNDS TO THE FACE AND NECK.HE WOKE UP TO THE SOUND OF HER SWEET VOICE AND THE FIRST THING HE SAW , WHEN HE COULD FINALLY OPEN HIS EYES WAS HER FACE. IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT FOR HIM. OVER THE FOLLOWING WEEKS HE BEGGED HER FOR A DATE WHICH SHE WOULD PROMPTLY DECLINE. AS HE IMPROVED HE WAS GIVEN A JOB AT THE CAMP HOUSE ESCOURTING SOLDIERS HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL. AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY HE WOULD ASK VELMA FOR A DATE. SHE INSISTED THAT SHE WAS FAR TOO OLD FOR HIM (5 YRS) AND HE WAS SUCH A NICE YOUNG MAN HE DIDN'T NEED TO BE SADDLED WITH A DIVORCEE. FINALLY HE WORE HER DOWN AND THEY BEGAN TO DATE.
GEORGE WAS TRANSFERRED TO FORT CHAFFEE IN ARKANSAS WHERE VELMA SOON ALSO TRANSFERRED. THEY WERE MARRIED THERE ON NOV.19,1945 AND HE WAS SOON DISCHARGED AND THEY TOOK OFF TO WASCO, CALIFORNIA.THEY WERE MARRIED 64 YEARS. THEY HAD A WONDERFUL LIFE TOGETHER.DESPITE GEORGE LOSING 1 EYE IN THE WAR HE MADE QUITE A NAME FOR HIMSELF RESTORING ANTIQUE CARS. VELMA SUPRISED HIM BY ENTERING HIM INTO HIS FIRST CAR SHOW AND THEN COULDN'T WAIT TO TELL EVERYONE HE HAD WON FIRST PLACE. AFTER THAT MANY OF THIER CARS WERE USED FOR THE GRAND MARHALL IN THE ROSE PARADE AT PASADENA, CA.
SHE WORKED AND RETIED FROM A DRESS SHOP IN WASCO.
AUNTIE V WAS A DEVOUT CHURCH OF CHRIST MEMBER. SHE WAS AN EXTRODINARY COOK. SHE WAS ALWAYS COMING UP WITH RECIPES THAT SHE BOASTED WERE SO EASY " EVEN A BACHELOR" COULD DO IT ! SHE WAS ALWAYS KIND, SMILING,GIGGLING AND CONSPIRING FOR THE GREATER GOOD WITH MY DAUGHTER AS SHE GREW UP.SHE WOULD BE YOUR FIERCEST DEFENDER, BEST CO-CONSPIRITER, AND BEST DEVOTED FRIEND. SHE WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR HER GRAND NIECE TABATHA TO BECOME A PASTRY CHEF.
THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANYONE LIKE MY AUNTIE V AND THERE NEVER WILL BE AGAIN. SHE WAS ONE OF A KIND. SHE WAS SO LOVED, AND IS SO MISSED. AND I CAN PROMISE YOU THIS, NO ONE WILL EVER TOP HER RED VELVET CAKE.
