Uriah was one of the early pioneers of Granville, settling there in 1808. An 1891 history of Bradford County says that in 1820, "in the split in the Methodist Church by those 'protesting against the 'episcopacy,'' a society of the new order was formed in Canton township, of which Uriah Baxter was the chosen leader". He attended the Methodist Reform Convention of 1830.
