DIED OF INFLUENZA
Mathias Becker First Cedar County Victim of Dreadful Disease
On Wednesday, this community was shocked and grieved to hear of the death of Mathias Becker which occurred at his home that morning. Mr. Becker had a slight cold when he accompanied his wife to Omaha the week before to consult a specialist and, when they returned, he was very ill with what proved to be Spanish Influneza. This disease terminated in pneumonia, and resulted in death.
The late Mr. Becker was born and grew to manhood in this county, and leaves a young wife and five little daughters. He was only 43 years of age. The funeral will be held Friday morning at Holy Trinity church.

The funeral of the late Mathias Becker, who died on Oct. 1 of pneumonia, following an attach of influenza, occurred last Friday morning from Holy Trinity church of this city. The late Mr. Becker was one of the most highly esteemed men in Cedar county, and this fact, together with the unusually sad circumstances ending his death, made the funeral one of the largest which have ever seen held here. People from all parts of the county came to pay their last respects to the memory of this excellent young man who was so suddenly cut off in the prime of life.
Mathias Becker was born on March 7, 1875, and died on Oct. 1, 1918. He was married in May, 1905 to Miss Johanna Huntman of St. Helena, and to this happy union six children were born, one of whom died at the age of two years and five of whom are living, Sylvia, aged 12, Leona, aged 9, Marina, aged 4, Geraldine, aged 2, and Genevieve, aged 9 months. The late Mr. Becker is also survived by his wife, who is seriously sick at the present time at the local hospital. He also leaves to mourn his loss the following brothers and sisters, all of this county: John, Peter, Joe, Mike and Henry, and Mrs. Daniel Felber, Mrs. Louis Hoesing and Mrs. Henry Lammers.
The late Mathias Becker was a loving husband and father, a good neighbor and an upright and highly respected citizen, and his death will be widely and sincerely mourned.
