Philip Howard and Rachel Davis Campbell were married May 20, 1841. Thirteen children were born to the couple. Five of the children died in early years of their life and are buried in Seay Cemetery, Graves County, Kentucky. Burial sites have been located for all the family.
Several of Philip and Rachel's children carried part of the couple's family names such as: Jency, Benjamin, Kimbrough, William, Douthit, Davie, Lenora, George Washington, Campbell, and Marmaduke. Maternal grandparents of Rachel were honored by the names, Wilson and Joseph, being used in generations to follow. Philip and Rachel were buried in Enon Cemetery, near their homeplace.
After Philip gave up farming he sold his land to a daughter and her husband, who continued in the Howard tradition of "large families". The Howard Homeplace became the Scherffius Homeplace and many children grew up as the home continued to be enlarged!
