Margaret Lynch "Daisy" Suckley

Death: Jun. 29, 1991

Neighbor, cousin, companion and confidante of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Margaret 'Daisy' Suckley was the fifth child and first daughter of Robert Bowne Suckley ( 1856 - 1921 ), and Elizabeth Phillips Montgomery Suckley ( 1864 - 1953 ). Born at the family's Hudson Valley estate, 'Wilderstein', at Rhinecliff, a hamlet within the town of Rhinebeck, Miss Suckley, the last surviving family member, frequently entertained the President when he was in Dutchess County, at his nearby Hyde Park home. During the Roosevelt presidency Daisy Suckley often resided at the White House, and accompanied F.D.R. on his frequent trips across the country; many times being in charge of 'Fala', the Scottish Terrier that she acquired as a young pup, and raised and trained at 'Wilderstein' before presenting to Roosevelt as a gift. 'Fala' sired two puppies born to Daisy's own dog, 'Button'. Serving as archivist at the presidential library on the Roosevelt estate in neighboring Hyde Park, she worked with the President on his papers, and often kept him company there, and in Washington, and on many trips. Both Daisy and 'Fala' were with F.D.R. when he was fatally struck at Warm Springs, Georgia in April, 1945. After her death, thousands of pages of notes, letters and diary entries of Roosevelt were discovered in a suitcase under the bed in her turret room at 'Wilderstein'. She passed away quietly, at her home, in her hundredth year. In 1983, retaining life interest, Miss Suckley placed her beloved home in the care of "Wilderstein Preservation", an organization dedicated to the restoration and display of this splendid house and estate overlooking the Hudson River.

NOTE: To locate the Suckley family lot enter the cemetery by the old Mill Road gateway and proceed to the large circle at the very end of the main cemetery road. The Suckley lot is adjacent to the west.
