Mary Esther Davenport was born at La Grange, Cook County, Illinois, daughter of Charles Webb, Jr., and Electa Sherman Moore Davenport. Her father soon moved back to Cambridge, Henry County, IL, where he had been a pioneer of 1836. Mary was raised in Henry County. As an adult, she moved from IL to Colorado and taught school at Trinidad, CO, for many years. She married John T. Hughes, 16 Jan 1883, at Trinidad. They owned a fine home in Trinidad at 903 San Pedro Street. John was an affluent lumberman. They adopted George and Adella; also Mary was very close to her brother, Charles', daughters, Mary Esther and Helen A. Davenport. Mary Hughes "Aunt Mate" died at Ordway, Crowley County, CO, at Charles Davenport's home. She remembered her siblings, their widows, and her nieces and nephews in her Will, probated at Ordway.
