The Elmira Daily Advertiser, Mon. March 31, 1902:
Hobart J. Moore of this village, who has been ill for several months and who had his left leg amputated about a week ago, died Saturday morning about 5 o'clock. Ever since the amputation of the limb, he had been apparently improving and his friends were very much encouraged that he would ultimately recover. However, on Friday he was taken worse and gradually grew worse until the end. It is thought that his immediate death resulted from hemorrhage of the stomach. The deceased was the second son of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Moore, old time residents of the town. Mr. Moore was 50 years of age and had lived all his life in Hammondsport, having been in the drug buysiness in the village for many years. He was a member of Urbana Lodge #459, F. & A. M. and also belonged to the Keuka Tribe of Red Men. The confidence of the people of the town of Urbana was repeatedly manifested by his election to the office of supervisor of the town, which office he had held for 9 terms. His death comes as a sad blow to the people of Hammondsport. He had so endeared himself to all that his taking away is felt to be a grevious loss. His universal kindness, sympathy and help to any and all who were in trouble was proverbial. None went away from his door empty handed and many were the blessings that the poor and needy called down upon him. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Leon Jaycox and Miss Mary Moore, and one son, Arthur. He also leaves one brother, Trevor Moore, of this village and one sister, Mrs. J. C. Mitchell of Chicago. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from St. James Episcopal Church of which he was a member.
