James served North Carolina for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Enlisted in L Co., 21st Inf Regiment NC; died at Guinea Station, VA on 25 December, 1862. Prior to enlisting he worked as a teacher. Enlist Rank, Private. Enlist Age, 24. Source: North Carolina Troops 1861-65, A Roster. He was the son of James C. and Ailsey (Alice) Tilley Throckmorton. He married Elizabeth Eleanor (Betty) Priddy. They had a daughter, Sarah Alice Throckmorton.
