Lee Howard Jr
Lee Howard Battershell was born February 19, 1920, in Lyons and died July 17, 1967 within the city limits of the same town. The son of Arthur and Mable Battershell, he had spent all but 12 years of his life in Lyons. Those 12 years were spent in the town of Stark which is in Neosho county. He was graduated from Lyons High School in 1940; after which he attended college at Sterling and Denver. On August 12, 1943 he married Maxine Swanson.
Battershell is survived by the widow and five sons; his mother, Mrs Mable Battershell of Lyons; one sister, Mrs Marie Bean of Riverside, California; and three brothers, Earl of Lyons; Weir of Powell, Wyoming, and John Crill of Booker, Texas. Another brother, Raymond, was killed in WWII.
The funeral was conducted by Rev Orvan Gilstrap, minister of the Christian Church where Battershell was a member. Soloist was Mrs Glenn Reed and organist was Mrs William Gray. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Ramsey, Carl Williams, Calvin Tucker, Joe Evans, Al Morales, and Jack Janssen. Active pallbearers were Robert Liska, Charles Archer, Walter Wright, Cecil Miller, Raymond Tobias and Gene Colle. Flower attendants were mesdames Walter Wright, Tom Ramsey, Raymond Tobias, and Frank Robinson.
Burial was in the Lyons cemetery with the IOOF in charge of the service and the American Legion providing the color guard.

BATTERSHELL MEMORIAL DEDICATION
A new lighted scoreboard at the large ball diamond is scheduled to be dedicated Sunday evening in memory of Lee Battershell, strong supporter of local youth sports program who was killed last year when the city tractor he was using to mow with overturned. The large scoreboard was mounted several days ago off the west edge of the diamond and more recently the Lee Battershell Memorial sign was added. The dedication will be in connection with a game with the Salina American Legion team. It is also scheduled to be Youth League night at the diamond. The scoreboard was financed through a memorial fund and donations.
(This ball diamond located on West Taylor St in Lyons at the Rice Co 4-H fairgrounds is now called Battershell Field.)
