| Birth: | Jan. 24, 1832 Petersburg Petersburg City Virginia, USA | | Death: | Feb. 2, 1865 Virginia, USA |  US Civil War Confederate General. He graduated from the US Military Academy in 1854, was commissioned an officer in the 2nd Dragoons and served on the frontier. At the out break of the Civil War, he resigned and was commissioned a Captain in the Confederate Cavalry. Promoted Lieutenant Colonel, he was captured at the Battle of Rich Mountain and was later prisoner exchanged. In July 1862, he was assigned as chief for staff of General Edmund Kirby Smith. In November 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General, commanding a cavalry brigade at Rich Mountain, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Wilderness, Shenandoah Valley and Winchester. On February 6, 1865, as rallied his troops at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, he was killed instantly.
