Betty was born in Bonham, Texas, to the late Frances and Dick Saunders. Mr. Saunders was a banker and prominent leader in Bonham. Betty attended the University of Texas in Home Economics in order to become a teacher. There she met and married Thomas Wendell Chaffin and in 1937 moved to the Chaffin family farm in Lorena where they made their home for the next 60 years. Betty was a devoted wife and mother. She took care of their five children, making much of their clothing. She always planted a garden, canning much of the vegetables and fruit. She also helped take care of Wendell's mother who lived with them. Outside the home she gladly served in her church in many capacities, including Sunday School Superintendent, youth group (YMYF) sponsor and singing in the choir for 50 years. She aided Wendell in his home building business keeping the books and also worked for several years in the office at Marstaller Motors.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell; brother, Dick Saunders Jr., of New York; and grandson, Kenny Walters.
She is survived by her sons, Tom Chaffin and Freda Blackwell, of Katy, and Tony Chaffin, of Lorena; daughters: Ann Cox and husband, David, of Lorena, Jan Walters and husband, Jerry, of McGregor, and Kay Gallaway and husband, Wilbur, of Portland, Texas; grandchildren: Gary Cox, Lori Moss, Kevin Walters, Karla Cunningham, Vicki Bennett, Bryan Chaffin, Brad Gallaway and Tanner Chaffin; and 11 great-grandchildren.
