Following information is from Dennis Brandt: "The son of John F. & Mary Cover, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted date and place unknown but ca. late August 1864, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg September 1, 1864, as a private with Co. E, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865, at Lynchburg, Virginia. To make matters confusing, there was a second and similarly-age Jacob Cover serving in the company, and the company registers mixes their data.
He married Clara Mitchell May 20, 1869, in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Mary Ann (b. 03/08/70) and John Samuel (b. 10/08/78). He lived with his family in Mason City, Custer County, Nebraska, (his second child was born there) before moving to Portland, Oregon."
