She was born Florabelle Downing but for her entire life she was known as Belle. She was the daughter of George "Edgar" and Alice (Paddleford) Downing. She and Robert lived for a while at Walden, then moved into Cabot, eventually buying the farm where she was to live for more than sixty years, providing a home for their son Curtis and his family. Curtis worked for a long while at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut.
