John W Benson was born 27 August 1829 in Wilson County, Tennessee to parents
Nancy Wooten Benson and John Robert Benson. He was the fourth of eight known
children: Mary A Benson, William Archibald Benson, Melissa Benson Green, Josiah
Benson, Lafayette F Benson and James Joiner Benson.
On 11 March 1858 John W. Benson and Mary Jane Peach (daughter of Susannah Baucom
Peach and William Lewis Peach) were married.
Their first known child, Thomas Benson was born in Tennessee. By 1860 the family
was living in Todd County, Kentucky where John Benson was a merchant and their
second known son, William A. Benson, was born.
It is not known where they spent the war years, but son Frank Benson (1866) and
daughter Bula Benson (@1869) were born in Tennessee and in the 1870 census they
were living in Shelbyville (Bedford County), Tennessee where John Benson was a
By 1871 the family had moved to Texas where John Benson joined the Methodist
Church in 1873. Son LaFayette "Fay" was born in 1879. The 1880 census has the family in
Bonham where John Benson was a harness maker. Son Michael Henry was born in
1882, the same year son Frank died. The last known record of John W Benson and
Mary Peach Benson is the 1900 census with the exception of his obituary which
appeared in the Nashville Christian Advocate on 16 October 1902:
JOHN W. BENSON born Wilson Co., Tenn., Aug. 27, 1829; married Mary Peach, Mar.
11, 1858; moved to Texas in August 1871; lived in Bonham for 23 years where he
died June 9, 1902; joined Methodist Church, Feb. 22, 1873; surviving were his
widow and 4 children.
Mary Peach Benson wed J. C. Moore in 1 May 1906 in Grayson County, Texas.
