Leo Alton Yankie, 97, of Waco, Texas, passed away Friday, January 8, 2010.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Garden Room with the Rev. Roy Marshall officiating. Burial will follow at China Spring Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, prior to the service.

Mr. Yankie was born on the family farm in in the Erath Community near China Spring, Texas, to the late Grover Leo and Zola V Whitfield Yankie in the big Yankie house on the original Yankie homeplace. He grew up there.

Mr. Yankie retired from Owens Illinois Glass Plant. He was a longtime active member of First Baptist Church of Hewitt. He and Evelyn Odell Rogers were married in 1932, and enjoyed traveling and playing "42" with members of their church group. Leo especially enjoyed gardening even up until his death.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Evelyn Rogers Yankie; son, Jimmy Ray Yankie; grandson, Robert "Bobby" Wayne Yankie; brothers: W. Mike "Hoss"Yankie and H. A. "Boots" Yankie.

Mr. Yankie is survived by great-granddaughters Robin Yankie, Lisa Yankie Hardin and husband, Sam; special nieces Gay, Nancy, Juliana and loving nephews Wayne Anderson Yankie, G. Mike Yankie, Thomas Lee Yankie and Sharif Sidarous.

Uncle Leo gave me (Niece, Nancy Yankie) potatoes, green beans and onions he had grown and picked himself within months before his death at the ripe age of 97! I took him roast with all the fixin's and home-made cornbread and buttermilk regularly prepared from the fruits of his labor. I went by almost daily as he was on my way to my gym --to take him something home-cooked and sat and have an always uplifting and entertaining conversation with him. Uncle Leo, like his Mississippi Daddy and Paternal Mississippi kin, told hilarious stories.

Uncle Leo spent in his later years every occasion with my family along with Aunt Evelyn even after she was in a wheelchair. They spent Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays with us. For Uncle Leo's birthday he always wanted Uncle Dan's barbecue and my daughter Juliana's pineapple cake. She is his grand niece, granddaughter of his brother Boots Yankie.

My sister Gay and I played the piano at his going home service by his special request. It was a command performance of the songs he wanted, "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "How Great Thou Art". Uncle Leo was a devout, faithful, witty and wonderful Christian man. Under many trials he was always faithful to his God and his family, and blessed this world with 97 years of Leo. He lived a life along with Aunt Evelyn that was beyond reproach from ANYONE. There's no doubt he joined that family circle IN THE SKY and is walking the streets paved with gold. We loved him so.
