The daughter of Civil War Presidential Cabinet Secretary Salmon P. Chase, she was known as the "Belle of Washington Society" during her father's tenure as a member of President Abraham Lincoln's cabinet. Widely reported to have been one of the most beautiful and brilliant women of her day, she and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln were society hostess rivals during the Civil War. Courted by many suitors, she eventually married the wealthy Governor of Rhode Island William Sprague of Rhode Island in November 1863 in what was was the social event of the season in the Nation's Capital. The marriage produced four children, and ultimately ended in divorce in 1882.
