(BOOK: "THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS, A SHORT HISTORY OF COBB County, IN GEORGIA"; SARAH BLACKWELL GOBER TEMPLE; COBB LANDMARKS AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Inc.; INFO PROVIDED BY MRS. MOLLY LOGAN, AUSTELL, GA). THE 1850 CENSUS INDEX LISTS HIM AS RITT (MISREAD, IT SAYS R M, BUT THE M IS VERYLIGHT), WIFE MARY ANN, AND THE FIRST FIVE CHILDREN. HIS TOMBSTONE IN THE HOWELL FAMILY CEMETERY READS RENE M. HIS CHILDREN WITH MARY ANN HOWELL ARE LISTED WITH THEIR SPOUSES, P. 72-3 UNDER THE PIONEER FAMILIES SECTION OF THE BOOK. "THE HOWELL AND PITTMAN FAMILIES LIVED IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE COUNTY IN THE VICINITY OF THE CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER. THE HOWELL PROPERTY, NEAR GARRETT'S BRIDGE, IS NOW OWNED BY MRS. HAMPTON HOWELL, THE DAUGHTER OF R. N. PITTMAN. THE ADJOINING PITTMAN PROPERTY IS OWNED BY MRS. HATTIE PITTMAN PARISH, DAUGHTER OF ALLISON PITTMAN." MARY ANN'S FATHER ISAAC HOWELL WAS A PIONEER SETTLER OF COBB AND THE BROTHER OF EVAN P. HOWELL OF GWINNETT County, THEN ATLANTA. HER BROTHERS MARRIED SEWELL SISTERS, AND ANOTHER BROTHER MARRIED ELIZABETH REDWINE WHOSE FAMILY WAS ALSO ASSOCIATED WITH THE WORD FAMILY IN NEIGHBORING COWETA COUNTY. MANY FULTON AND COBB County, LANDMARKS ARE NAMED FOR THE HOWELL AND SEWELL FAMILIES (HOWELL MILL RD., SEWELL MILL RD, SEWELL FARMS SUBDIVISIONS, ETC). MARY ANN HOWELL'S UncLE CAPTAIN EVAN P. ACQUIRED THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION NEWSPAPER WHEN IT WAS STRUGGLING IN ITS INFAncY AND WAS EDITOR-IN-CHIEF FOR MANY YEARS. DESCENDANT OF THE HOWELL FAMILY CLARK HOWELL HOGAN DISCUSSED FOUNDING OF THE HOWELL FAMILY CEMETERY IN ONE OF THE VOLUMES OF "COBB COUNTY, GEORGIA CEMETERIES." HE SAID THAT THE "CEMETERY WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1860 WITH THE DEATH OF ISAAC HOWELL WHO FELL DEAD, ACCORDING TO FAMILY LEGEND, 'CUSSING ABRAHAM LIncOLN, HAVING SAID THAT HE WOULD RATHER DIE THAN SEE ABE PRESIDENT.'"
