Doris Allsup, 82, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday evening, Jan. 3, 2010, at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 7, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Childers of the First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery in Mahaska County. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel. The family will be at the funeral chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. to greet visitors. Memorials may be made to Imagine the Possibilities or the Christian Opportunity Center.Doris Eileen Allsup, daughter of Van Albert and Mabel Edith Kirk Merriman, was born May 15, 1927, in Monte Vista, Colo. As a young child, the family moved to Oskaloosa and Doris was a 1945 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. She married Edgar Dean Allsup on Nov. 7, 1948, in Oskaloosa where they made their home. Dean and Doris owned and operated the Donut Shop from 1977-1979. Doris worked at Alsop's Department Store in the women's clothing department and later as a sales clerk for Snider's Inc., and The Sunflower. She retired in 1990. Doris attended the First Church of the Nazarene and was a member of King's Daughters and Sons and a former member of the Oskaloosa Chapter 146 O.E.S. Her family includes her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and John Szopinski. of Green Bay, Wis., and a sister, Alice Chamberlin. of Fairfield Bay, Ark.Besides her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Dean, their daughter, Pam, and two sisters: Dorothy Merriman (as a young child) and Helen Hendricks. Doris's life revolved around caring for her family and her friends. This is who she was.
